The Review Oath Taking Ceremony 2022: Student Journalists vow to a New Era of Service
Journalism, the weapon of the brave who amplifies the voices of the unheard. As the call of service re-echoed in the university, student journalists responded and willingly offered themselves to the students.
The New Editorial Board and Staff sworn in position at the Review, the official student publication of Northwestern University. The Oath Taking Ceremony was conducted at the New Media Hall, Ben A. Nicolas (BAN) building on October 7, 2022.
Atty. Ferdinand Nicolas, the University President, delivered his warm and meaningful message to the staffs congratulating them via video clip. “I speak not only the recent accomplishments of the Review, but of all the Review staff in the ninety years of existence of the Northwestern University. Ever has the Review been an effective medium communicating the important student concerns and issues to administration with the hope of having these addressed satisfactorily. I, for my part, has always treated the Review as an important voice of the studentry which aids administration to better our service in the pursuit of excellence,” he said.
“Just a word of advice, when reporting the news make sure to have a truly balanced view of the story; allow all sides to present their position. In reporting the news objectively, you will gain more credibility as a new batch of student journalists, helping us to achieve the mission and vision of the institution,” Atty. Nicolas added.
Moreover, Ms. Ruth Anne Ragutero, Executive Assistant to the President, Northwestern University and the inducting officer, shared her inspirational message. She emphasized the harsh realities in journalism and stressed the importance of keeping the passion on fire.
“I hope your journey with passion will make you grow and foster. Because I did. And I know, you will. Just keep her close to you, and you will be fine. The two of you, combined together, is a magnificent, beautiful, work of art that the universe has long been hoping to discover. I will live for that day to see you all be that hope of this universe,” she stated.
Lastly, Prof. Joan Velasco, the Review Adviser gave her closing remarks centered in celebrating success, and dedication in tasks. She expressed her gratitude and admiration to the students who returned and joined the student publication.
“Always be with the truth and keep in mind that the Review’s goal is to amp up the voices of your fellow students. We will start this academic year strong, and we will finish stronger. We’re all on this together the Review. Thank you and congratulations to the new set of Editorial Board and Staff of the Review AY 2022-2023,” she concluded.
During an interview, Iommi Arabella Paras, new staff from the broadcasting department shared her insights in joining the Review. “Joining the review is a big commitment. As a nursing student I have tons of workload, and it had been heavy on my mind to balance my studies and journalism. But being part of the publication is an honor. I felt the sense of belongingness. And what I look forward in my stay is the knowledge I can gain from my co-journalist and adviser I am looking forward in serving the students as well,” she said.
