Studs accomplish DRLE, NWU Nursing Dept only recipient in the province

The 2nd year to 4th year nursing students of Northwestern University had their Digital Related Learning Experience (DRLE) via Zoom Videoconferencing App on January 19-20, 2022. The NWU Department of Nursing is the only recipient of this DRLE in Ilocos Norte. The implementation of DRLE in NWU Nursing started in the Second Semester of Academic Year 2020-2021.

DRLE is a continuity plan for the students’ Related Learning Experience (RLE) because they do not have any experience in the clinical area because of the pandemic.

“The DRLE serves as an avenue to hone both the knowledge and skills needed [to become] a professional nurse. It provides an opportunity for student nurses to be exposed to the different units of the hospital via virtual platforms and to witness first-hand nursing procedures needed
in their profession. Through this DRLE, we gained an overview [of] the different nursing practices, equipment, and concepts,” said Jeronimo B. Sales Jr., a Level IV Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) student.

According to Brittany Lei Maquiraya, a Level II BSN student, DRLE gave them comprehensive and detailed information about maternal and child health nursing. The benefit of it is that even if they weren’t able to have their exposures in the hospital, they would have seen and had a better understanding of how to do immediate newborn care and how to take care of the mother after delivery.

“Our plan for the next semester is to continue the same strategy as an avenue to meet the learning outcomes of every RLE subject,” said Prof. Charliemane A. Bullalayao, the Department Head of Nursing.

After the virtual exposure of the students in the different areas in the hospital or procedures done by the Carl Balita Review Center (CBRC) lecturers, a post-test has been administered to check the students’ learning outcomes.
