Revitalize Episode 4: An inside look to E-sports and Digital Journalism

The official student publication of Northwestern University spearheaded its fourth episode of Revitalize: The Review Webinar Series, catering to interested participants from different schools on November 12, 2021 via Zoom Videoconferencing app.

Mr. Gio Miguel D. Venturina, contributing writer of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, was the first speaker of the event. He discussed E-sports, including its history, and shared some terminologies regarding the field. He made the discussion indulging by comprehensively answering the students during the open forum.

“Always have the flavor of sport injected…Simplicity is most preferred,” he said while giving tips and emphasizing that everyone needs to choose simple words in constructing E-sports articles for readers.

The main goal of e-sports articles, as mentioned during his discussion, is to always write to express, not to impress, and these articles should be able to be used as telescopes for the game.

As for the beginners, he encouraged them to learn the foundations of the game first. “Try to learn the basics of each game; you can always write an E-sports article as you write a sports article,” he recommended.

Ms. Ma. Joreina Therese A. Blanco, Information Officer II and Information Center Manager of the Philippine Information Agency-Ilocos Norte, tackled Digital Journalism.

Social media ethics were highlighted in her discussion. “As digital journalists, we need to use social media in the right form, in the right way, and with the right content,” she said. The first goal, as she emphasized, is the use of visuals in making digital news to capture viewers’ attention.

She also encouraged everyone, especially the aspiring content creators, to create their own original brand without copying existing content.

“Remain committed to the truth when sharing important notes in making video content about news articles,” she said.
