NWU Maritime studs put life first through blood donation drive
Northwestern University through the College of Maritime Education (COME) participated in the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of The Philippine Red Cross on April 23, 2022, at the Robinsons Place Ilocos.
“The Philippine Red Cross is the center hub of voluntary service, here, we don’t talk only about voluntary action and service. Here, we actually let them [students] participate and enjoy the fulfilling part of doing service to all people without remuneration and expectation of reward, and this is the time that we should all be united now to do voluntary service, especially in this time of the pandemic,” said Dir. Maria C. Ang, Chairman of the Philippine Red Cross Laoag City-Ilocos Norte Chapter.
Dir. Ang also added, “This is the assistant of effort moving and hoping for a better community through the efforts of voluntary workers. So, I hope the young will learn from the old that we cannot be any better if we do not all become one and join together in promoting our humanitarian needs so that we can be better and stronger as Ilocanos.”
In joining the celebration, the COME students took part in the blood donation drive.
“In our department, there are things we call unity, camaraderie, and brotherhood, and maybe that’s the reason why they are (cadets) present here today. And the cadets who have joined this event surely have the will and they just really want to help everyone who needs help. And as an officer, I can really see their will to help since this is their act of showing their voluntariness,” said Patricia Galban, n2 Intelligence of COME.
“At first, I was really nervous since this is only my first time, but now, I feel happy and relieved since I know that in my simple action of donating, I can help and save someone,” said Zei Carl Tandoc, 1st-year student of COME.
“This is my first time and if there will be again a time or a chance to donate, I will definitely do it again because I know that is already my way to help others,” Dheniel Sambrana, 1st-year student of COME, added.
“I donated because I know that it is my simple way of showing how I care for other people. I donated because I can, I want to help, and I want to save,” John Joe Balanay Jr., a 2nd-year student of COME stated.
