NWU CCJE Spreads Hope Behind Bars Through Gift-Giving Program

JANUARY 17, 2025 – The College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) organized a heartwarming gift-giving and feeding program for Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) with the theme “Journey of Hope: Embracing the Continuous Journey of Hope,” at Laoag City Jail. The program aimed to inspire and uplift the spirits of the PDL Community.

Dr. Jonah B. Badua, Dean of CCJE, spearheaded the event in collaboration with the NWU Center for Community and Social Development (CCSD).

Under the leadership of the College of Criminal Justice Education Student Organization (CCJESO) president, Ms. Sandy Albano, planned the program as part of its dedication to community and social development activity with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.

The program’s success was further ensured by the strong support of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), with Jail Inspector Ms. Sheila Marie D. Sapaden, the acting Jail Warden of BJMP Laoag City Jail.

Female dorm and LGBT queens of PDLs showcased their dancing talents along with Rey Alexis Gumarit, representative of CCJESO.

Inspirational messages were delivered by Dr. Badua and Jail Warden Sapaden, both giving hope to the PDL community. “This is an avenue to touch the lives of and empower the PDLs and support the programs of the Laoag City Jail, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, as part of their reformation and rehabilitation program,” Dr. Badua stated.

Moreover, Sandy Albano reflected that her inspiration to initiate this event stemmed from a deep sense of social responsibility and the desire to make a positive impact on the lives of PDLs. “As a criminology student and a student leader, I have always been driven by the belief that rehabilitation and reintegration are critical components of the justice system,” she expressed.

The theme, “Journey of Hope,” resonated deeply with Ms. Albano’s vision of creating a more inclusive and supportive society. “It was a chance to embody the values of restorative justice and to inspire others to join in creating a more inclusive and hopeful community,” she added.

The efforts and initiative are a testament to the university’s commitment to community service and its dedication to fostering the power of compassion and the potential for change, second chances, and hope among all members of society.
