A Tradition Begins, NWU Launches First PolSci Ceremony

Northwestern University held its first-ever Pinning and Coating Ceremony for Political Science students on January 28, 2025 at the university International House. The event marked a significant milestone for 15 third-year students who received their pins and 10 fourth-year students who were coated, symbolizing their academic progression and commitment to leadership and service.

Dr. Yolanda S. Lao, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, delivered the welcome remarks, emphasizing the significance of the ceremony.

“To the third-year students, your pins symbolize your commitment to furthering your knowledge and understanding of political science. And to our fourth-year students, your coat represents your readiness to take on the complexities of leadership, policymaking, and public service,” said Dr. Lao.

Atty. Ferdinand S. Nicolas, university President, encouraged the students to maintain their idealism and avoid the pitfalls of tribalism. Meanwhile, the guest speaker, Atty. Johann Christian G. Samonte, further inspired attendees with his insights on public service and leadership.

The event also recognized students who participated in the student mobilization program in Taiwan in partnership with Tamkang University. Additionally, students who successfully completed the Certified Paralegal (CEPL) Examination were honored, with Ms. Stephanie S. Bonilla, Supreme Student Council President, achieving the Top 1 ranking.

The celebration continued with the much-anticipated Political Science Night with This year’s theme, “All White,” setting the stage for an evening of elegance and celebration.
