Caps, Pins, and Lamps Declare: This is My Now for 310 NWU Nursing Students
The College of Allied Health and Sciences (CAHS) of Northwestern University held its solemn Capping, Pinning, and Candle Lighting Ceremony on September 10, 2025, at the Aquino Multi-purpose Center. A total of 310 Level 2 nursing students—76 males and 234 females were formally welcomed into the nursing profession through the symbolic rituals of capping, pinning, and candle lighting.
Delivering the words of welcome, Prof. Harvey B. Ganal, Head of the Department of Nursing and Associate Dean of the College of Allied Health Sciences (CAHS), highlighted the symbolism of the occasion. He reminded the students that while the caps and pins are emblems of honor, they also serve as a call to perseverance and responsibility. “Later, you will receive your caps and pins. Let these symbols inspire you to strive even harder. For this is not the end, but the beginning of a more challenging and rewarding journey ahead,” he said.
Following tradition, the Entrance of Florence Nightingale and Lighting of the Lamp, a highlight of the program, was personified by Ms. Suzette Agag, RN, Batch 2010, symbolizing the legacy of Florence Nightingale as the Lady with the Lamp. The ritual served as a solemn reminder of the students’ duty to provide light and hope to their patients in times of illness and despair.
The inspirational messages from the university leaders reinforced the values of compassion and resilience. Dr. Charliemane A. Bullalayao, Dean of CAHS and Vice President for Academic Affairs, delivered a welcome address where he reminded the candidates that while they will carry titles and responsibilities, what truly defines them is their compassion.
“You are healers. You are advocates. You are leaders. You are the bridge between science and humanity,” he said with conviction. “In a world that often forgets its compassion, you are called to remind it, one patient at a time, that dignity matters, that care matters, and that every mile is worth living a capital for.”
Furthermore, Atty. Ferdinand S. Nicolas, University President, recognized not only the hard work of the students but also the sacrifices of their families. “We also recognize the hard work and sacrifices of your parents and your family members to help you reach your goals. We here at Northwestern University continue to strive to make your learning experience more meaningful and effective,” he stated, assuring the students that the institution is continuously creating opportunities to enrich their academic and professional development.
Reflecting on their journey thus far, Ms. Jeozelle Mhei J. Calzada, BSN Level 2, one of the most promising students in Level 2, delivered a speech emphasizing the growth and transformation they have experienced.
“Today, wearing our caps and pins we stand proud and confident. This symbolizes our dedication, hard work, and loyalty with the nursing profession. To my fellow student nurses, let us build confidence, face challenges and keep striving knowing that these difficulties are not the end but steps towards fulfilling our true calling,” she remarked.
Subsequently, Gian Luigi T. Alejandro of BSN Level 2 extended heartfelt appreciation to parents, faculty members, and university leaders for their unwavering support. He emphasized that the ceremony was not only a celebration of achievement but also a commitment to face the greater challenges ahead in their chosen profession. “We recently experienced our first two-day duty in the hospital and rural health unit. Those days were new, and it is just the beginning, but they gave us insight to the realities with what we are learning about,” he stated.
For the 310 candidates, the capping, pinning, and candle lighting ceremony was more than a rite of passage. As they held their lamps high, they carried with them not just the light of Florence Nightingale, but the promise of becoming compassionate professionals dedicated to the health and dignity of humanity.
