343 Student Nurses Embrace the Light of Their Future

The Capping, Pinning, and Candle Lighting Ceremony for 343 Level 2 nursing students took place on February 28 at the Aquino Multi-purpose Hall, hosted by the College of Allied Health Sciences of Northwestern University.

This event marked a significant moment in the student’s academic journey, symbolizing their transition from theoretical learning to the practical application of nursing skills.

Prof. Leofel Fernandez, Officer-In-Charge Head of the Department of Nursing, opened the program with a welcome address. She emphasized that nursing is not merely a profession, but a profound calling to serve others. Prof. Fernandez highlighted the significance of the capping and pinning, which symbolized the students’ progression from classroom knowledge to real-world application of their nursing skills.

“It is with a commitment to build, and a promise to provide care with light to those in need. The capping and pinning symbolize your transition from theoretical knowledge to the practical application of nursing skills, bringing you one step closer to becoming competent healthcare providers,” Prof.Fernandez added.

Dr. Charliemane A. Bullallayao, Dean of the College of Allied Health Sciences and the Vice President for Academic Affairs delivered a message of inspiration to the students, emphasizing the significance of the ceremony and the responsibilities that come with being a nurse.

“From this day forward, you will walk the path of your journey as future nurses,” he said.

He further explained the symbolism of the nurse’s cap, pin, and lamp. The nurse’s cap, he explained, represents professionalism, humility, and a commitment to high standards of care, while the pin signifies the rigorous training and values they are expected to uphold. The lamp, he continued, is a tribute to Florence Nightingale and symbolizes the radiant knowledge, wisdom, and compassionate service that nurses bring to their patients.

“You are not just gaining clinical skills, but embracing a lifelong commitment to serve with heart and soul. Your cap, your pins, and your lamps represent the responsibility you now carry as patients will look to you for competence and empathy in their most vulnerable moments. Carry the experience of Florence Nightingale, allowing your practice to be defined by excellence, integrity, and compassion,” he emphasized.

Subsequently, Atty. Ferdinand S. Nicolas, University President delivered an inspirational message to the students, emphasizing the vital impact nurses have on patients and their families.

“It is with pride, honor, and joy that I congratulate our students on this milestone in their educational journey, leading to their dream of becoming registered nurses,” he said.

Atty. Nicolas also reminded the students that their work goes beyond technical skills. “Remember, in your line of work, yours may be the last faces patients will see. On the other hand, imagine the gratitude of your patients and their families when they recover because of the care you have given,” he added.

He concluded his message with a verse from the book of Proverbs “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

Reflecting on their journey thus far, Ms. Krystel Joy Arucan, one of the most promising students in Level 2, delivered a speech emphasizing the growth and transformation they have experienced.

“We have come a long way, transitioning from novice learners to individuals equipped with functional knowledge and skills, ready to make a difference in the lives of others,” Ms. Arucan said.

Ms. Arucan acknowledged the challenges and setbacks the class had faced, urging her classmates to view these experiences as opportunities for growth. She reflected on how obstacles along the way had served as valuable lessons and motivators. She highlighted that the resilience of their patients in the face of illness is a powerful testament to hope and underscores the vital role nurses play in the recovery process.

Following Ms. Arucan’s speech, Ms. Nathalie Keithlyn Cheng, another outstanding Level 2 student, expressed her gratitude and appreciation to those who have supported her throughout her journey. She reflected on how this achievement is the result of years of dedication and considered it a significant milestone. She also shared how the event has further fuelled her motivation to complete the final two years of her formal education.

The pinning and capping ceremony was a meaningful event, recognizing the dedication and commitment of the 343 Level 2 nursing students as they continue their journey toward becoming skilled and compassionate healthcare professionals.
