Nightingales Secure 3rd Place in Fifth Nurses and Midwives Week Jingle Contest
With the theme “Together We Make a Difference from Evidence to Reality,” nursing students showcased their talent in the 5th Nurses and Midwives Week Jingle Contest and were able to secure the 3rd spot. The competition was held at the Governor Roque B. Ablan Sr. Memorial Hospital (GRBASMH) Student’s Lounge on October 25, 2023.
Northwestern University’s nursing students, along with their counterparts from Divine Word College of Laoag (1st place) and Northern Christian College (2nd place), exhibited their musical creativity and dedication to the cause, aligned with the event’s objective, which is to provide a platform for aspiring talents to express their appreciation for the contributions of nurses and midwives to healthcare.
The participation of NWU’s nursing students was under the guidance of Professor Imelda Dawang, Head of the Department of Nursing, and Dr. Charliemane Bulalayao, Dean of the College of Allied Health Sciences, who spearheaded their involvement in the competition.
An original piece was prepared by the students along with their dance steps as preparation for the competition. The performers were Aldrich Calma, Doreen Agatol, Helena Rose Agudong, Desiree Lyn Borja, Mariah Desiree Cadiente, Frances Kyle Lapitan, Maria Jc Belle Pumaras, Patricia Lorraine Ramos, Marife Sthefany Salvador, and Michael Salvador.
“The jingle competition is one way of enhancing potentialities in all aspects— psychosocial, emotional, physical to achieve a well-rounded personality,” said Prof. Daoang. “The students were excited to participate although it was too short a time, they were only informed to join last monday, it was a one-day practice but were able to create an impact by inspiring other students to join and give their best,” she added.
Ms. Desiree Borja, one of the student nurses, shared her experience, saying, “Honestly, we only practiced for 7 hours, and originally, we weren’t supposed to perform in this contest. On the day of the contest, we gave it our best shot, and we are still thankful because we managed to pull off our performance.”
Despite the last-minute participation, the NWU students made a remarkable performance.
