With the theme, “Converting the Past to a Promising Future,” future Civil and Geodetic Engineers celebrated CE-GE Week 2023 on February 16-17, 2023. The said event was spearheaded by the Civil Engineering Student Organization (CESO), Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE) NWU Chapter, and Geodetic Engineering Student Organization (GESO).

A motorcade around the city and an opening program at the Aquino Multi-Purpose Center was conducted to mark the start of the two-day event.

Dr. Jennifer Del Amen, the newly-appointed dean of the College of Engineering, Architecture, and Technology (CEAT), imparted her inspirational message with thoughts coming from the book โ€œThe Winning Attitudeโ€.

“To reach greater success and create the life you want, one requirement is to develop a winning attitude. When describing a person’s attitude, it refers to how they conduct themselves, their outlook in life, and the way they usually behave,โ€ she stated.

โ€œIt’s commonly accepted that those who have a good attitude have a better chance to achieve the success they want,” Dr. Del Amen added.

She also discussed how to develop a winning attitude that will support engineering students in reaching the outcomes they want easier and faster.

“You do not develop a winning mindset by chance or luck. You need to work on it and constantly review your progress, especially when things aren’t going well. When you know you have a winning mindset, the respect you have for yourself and others have for you will help make your life so much better,” she said.

Meanwhile, an afternoon seminar was held at the CEAT-AVR where Revit and STAADPro Presentation were discussed by Jubert Anacleto, a fourth-year CE student.

He discussed techniques in building architectural design, MEP and structural engineering, and construction that helps engineering students automate their tasks by removing the time-consuming and laborious manual methods.

Various competitions were also conducted in different venues which included Quiz Bee, Poster Making, and Traverse Race. Amazing Race, Bridge Building, and Rube Goldberg competitions were also organized on the second day. It aimed to enhance the skills of the students in line with their course.

A socialization night was attended by the CE-GE students, instructors, and alumni to culminate the two-day activity, with Mr. and Ms. CE-GE 2023 as well as CE-GE Reyna 2023 as highlights. Engr. Rafael Galicinao, President of PICE Ilocos Norte- Laoag City Chapter, emphasized that the foundation of all virtues is humility. He stated that upholding moral principles is vital in the profession of civil engineering.

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. If you want to touch the past, touch a rock. If you want to touch the present, touch a flower. And if you want to touch the future, then touch a life,” he explained. Moreover, Mr. James Dela Cruz and Prima Rapisora were hailed as Mr. and Ms. CE-GE 2023, whereas Alic Aguinaldo grabbed the title of CE-GE Reyna 2023.
